The Development of WC-Based Composite Tools for Friction Stir Welding of High-Softening-Temperature Materials

This work presents a detailed investigation for the effect of Y2O3 and Ni additions on densification behavior, microstructural evolution mechanical properties WC-Co-TaC-NbC composite. With aim obtaining WC-based composites with improved fracture toughness, to be used in severe conditions high-temperature deformation, different concentrations were incorporated without 5 wt% addition. The consolidated characterized using density measurement, XRD, SEM, hardness, transverse rupture strength compression testing. Fully dense obtained through applied consolidation regime cold compaction sintering at 1450 °C 1.5 h under vacuum relative up 97%. addition 2.5 base WC composite increased then slightly decreased increase content. significantly XRD results indicated existence Co3W3C ?-phase after sintering, intensity its peaks was reduced Ni. microstructure consisted three phases: WC, Y2O3. area fraction phase as weight increased. In terms transverse-rupture (TRS) compressive by Accordingly, this composition manufacture tools friction stir welding high-softening-temperature materials, which successfully 25 plunges about 500 cm butt joints nickel-based carbon–steel alloys.
